I have a bad case of levee envy.
My good friend Gerry sent me a link to Common Dreams which showed how sophisticated other countries levees are, and how they manage to keep their heads above water. The first two pictures are how the British and Dutch do it.
The third picture is a great example of our Yankee Ingenuity.

I really hope that bottom picture is not from the Sacramento area.
Yeah, I hear that our levee system in California is not doing too well. It's alarming how debillitated our country's infrastructure is.

It's because of statements like, "Why should my tax dollars be used so some idiot can live below sea level."
If global warming continues, there's going to be a boatload of us living below sea level.

We build such beautiful highways and bridges. Why can't we build a nice levee system? I can think of one reason why it's worth the investment. Practice! As sea levels start to rise, we should plan on getting good at it. There's no reason we can't be better than the Dutch.
It's true that the local government infrastructure is inadequate to the task. I.e. a lot of money will be siphoned off for corruption, but the real problem here is that the Republican Administration finds it hard to get serious about reconstructing a place that has so many Democrats.
