So Much for That Idea

Am I Wacky On The Junk, or didn't Fearless Leader at one point say that the reason we're fighting terrorists Over There--AKA Iraq, is so that we won't have to fight terrorists Over Here--AKA Good ol' Main Street, USA?

I don't have an exact quote, so I could be mistaken.

Because that was the thought that came to my muzzy little head when I read this exchange:

Judge J. Michael Luttig, who presided at the hearing, pressed [U.S. Solicitor General Paul] Clement on whether the government was suggesting that the battlefield in the war on terror now includes the U.S.

“I can say that. I can say it boldly,” Clement said.

So we're fighting the war over there, so we don't have to fight the war over here. But we're still fighting the war over here.

I see.

Well, it's a good thing there's no place for terrorists to train,, then.

Sorry Doc. Still doing that sarcasm thing.

Yeah, that strategy makes total sense.

Wait, no it doesn't. No, no, not at all.

Do the sarcasm thing. Don't lose your edge. Your soul will go with it. It's good to be angry. It keeps us from complacency.

Quite frankly I have never understood that logic. Terrorists create terror through random acts of violence against unsuspecting, usually civilian, unprotected targets in order to achieve a political goal.

They don't usually attack armies in the field perpared for battle. It just doesn't make sense. It's hard to create terror when the target is expecting attack and prepared.

Yes, there are foreigners in Iraq fighting with the Iraqi insurgents against the American occupation, but does anyone believe that those few that are in Iraq take away any capability from the nebulous groups like al quaeda? I think the fact that the London attacks were perpetrated by a home-grown UK group proves that "fighting them there" doesn't mean we won't have to fight "them" here.

911 will be paying dividends for terrorist worldwide for decades. They have to do anything in the US anymore. Occasionally there will be a cell discovered or a plot uncovered, but those are the actual acts of terrorism. They keep America paranoid and scared. As long as we are we will continue to act exactly how the "terrorists" want us to. Acting like bullies ending up shunned by the rest of the world couldn't play into the hands of someone wanting to hurt the US better. Chipping away at the civil liberties that are the core of our society is eventually going to get them what they want. It's like cancer. Either we will become weak or our society will cast out the war hawks (chemo) and change course.
