"Give Me A Better Idiot"

From the Guardian Unlimited: "Damage Exposure Will Wake America Up."

As the levees are repaired, and pumping of the water begins, it's possible that there are as many as 10,000 dead in New Orleans that will be discovered.

"There are no jobs. There are no homes to go to, no hotels to go to, there is absolutely nothing here," deputy police chief Warren Riley said. "We advise people that this city has been destroyed ... it has completely been destroyed."

--

The Jefferson Parish president, Aaron Broussard, told CBS news that government would have to be held accountable for what had happened.

"Bureaucracy has murdered people in the greater New Orleans area and bureaucracy needs to stand trial before congress today," he said.

"Take whatever idiot they have at the top, give me a better idiot. Give me a caring idiot. Give me a sensitive idiot. Just don't give me the same idiot."

Christopher Hitchens sums it up. Know him? Hard core conservative/neo-con author-journalist? Hates liberals. Loves Bush. His website. You know it's bad when he turns on one he so admired.

CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS: It's one of the two or three best-known risks to the United States, is that the levees protecting New Orleans could break. I know that and I live in Washington. It's also, I'm afraid to say, the only thing the President has said about this that anyone can remember. I mean, he didn't get there - it isn't that they didn't fly to the city beforehand, which he could easily have done on that kind of warning, and say, "Look, I'm the President of the United States, we can't lose or even risk losing one of our great historic cities. I have come to make sure that all the state and city officials have got everything they could possibly want in advance." For example, a few piles of bottled water wouldn't have come amiss if there's going to be suddenly too much water but none of it drinkable. Elementary things like that. He didn't do that. Then he did a fly-by from his holiday retreat, and then he got there too late and then he said something completely idiotic. So I really can't see there is any forgiveness for that. And remember also, that he did interrupt his holiday not very long ago to pay attention to something that was none of his business at all as President. Namely, the alleged living condition of an actually dead woman named Terri Schiavo.
Yes. Please. Give us a better idiot.

I finally got around to answering your questions about what I actually believed in. It's in a post on my blog. And I've just got to say....he's the idiot we have and the idiot we'll continue to have until the next election. How many bad things can we (and I mean those that don't care for him) say about the guy?

Steff: there is an apparatus with which we could remove the president.

It's called impeachment. The republicans tried to impeach Clinton, but were unable to. Nixon resigned before he could be impeached. It is not a pretty, nor a particularly welcome process, but it is something to consider.

Another thing would be to show displeasure with the President by voting against legislatiors in his party. This would be my preference. I don't think this country is strong enough to withstand another impeachment at this time.

Steff: haven't read your post, but it sounds like you're staying, 'hey, sure the captain of the boat is a retard, but he's the captain we've got captain until we make port so let's just go with him." But if the retard hurts people on the boat every day with bad choices, you're suggesting not to talk about it. And if he drives the boat into the pier on arrival day, it explodes in flames and we all die, I'm venturing to guess it was a bad choice. That's what we're saying. If they guy in charge is hurting people through bad choices or inacation, over and over again, make a change immediately. If not by removing him, like BP says, then remove his weapon, which is the congress. Do what voters did in '94 to Clinton, showing displeasure at too much change too soon, and a concerted attack by right wing media - shift the congress away from his party. They control the money, they control the choices of which bills come to vote, they control which ammendments get stripped from bills (like the ammendment protecting those from natural disaster in the bankruptcy bill, with the GOP voted down, so that now everyone in Orleans who lost everything, have no job, no home, no city really anymore, and possibly lost part of their family, have to pay back every debt on their credit card and don't have any protection, or the companies can take action and put liens on their accounts and take what they have. Fair?) Anyway, hopefully you get the drift. If not, you have to go with your beliefs, I'm not interested in trying to change your opinion. You need to pursue your curiosity on this administration, or not, and change your opinions on your own, or not.

I think I'll leave the commenting on things that I'm not really informed about to those of you who are and are passionately so. Thanks for the comments so far...they've been kinder than I'm sure you could have made them.

Steff: I appreciate where you're coming from. All I'm saying is: inform yourself. I think it was Jefferson who said something to the effect of: a democracy is impossible without a population that's educated. Thanks for you comments, as always.

Education . . . hmmmm . . .
During the last Presidential election campaign, a high ranking Republican said something to the effect of the following:
The more educated a person becomes, the more likely they are to vote Democrat. . . Just goes to show there can be too much of a good thing.
And so - the Republicans have succeeded in creating a nation of idiots (at least half of the country voted in the idiot "leader" - twice!) by continuously cutting higher education grants so that now only the rich can afford go on to college or technical schools. And just try to get a local referendum passed to keep your school district K-12 operating with proper facilities, class sizes and staff - but expect the referendum to fail because the taxpayers cannot "afford" an extra few lousy hundred dollars a year on their multi-million dollar homes. Yeah right!
Most disgusting is the poor people (yes - including you delusionary middle income folk) who have the illusion that the Republican party INCLUDES them. Well it does - only because it caters to their bigotry, racism, homphobia, etc. - but you will NOT see any of that party's wealth trickle down to you!
By the way - have any of these Bible toting so-called Christian right ever read in their Bibles that usury is a SIN??? They probably skipped those pages, especially since that is how they make their "honest" living.
Is there any room left in Canada???
